Timetable of Demolitions - St Austell Town Centre

The St Austell Town centre regeneration scheme will take another step forward next week when contractors arrive on site to prepare for the second and final phase of demolitions.  This newsletter sets out the timetable of work.  It will be carried out by Gilpin Demolition, the same company that did the first phase of demolitions.  The work will include the demolition of the former Tesco building, and the building housing QS, Peacocks and The Engine House in Aylmer Square.  The cinema, which was recently acquired by the South West of England Regional Development Agency, is likely to be demolished early in the new year, and it will remain open for the time being.

Tuesday 29th August

Gilpin Demolition will arrive on site to set up their compound which will be located next to the former multi storey car park on Trinity Street.

From 8:00 am the access ramp to the town from the car park will be closed for health and safety reasons.  Members of the public are requested to use alternative routes to the town during the demolition works.  Suggested alterantive routes are via South Street and Trinity Street.

A third of the car park will need to be cordoned off during the demolitions so there will be fewer spaces available but it will remain open.

Gilpin will vacate the car park before the Christmas holidays to make more car parking available.

They will start stripping the inside of the former Tesco building almost immediately and this is expected to take two weeks.

Sunday 17th and 24th September and Sunday 1st October

Three all day road closures on South Street are planned on the above dates so that the contractors can demolish the former Tesco building.

Diversions will be posted.  It is possible that only two out of the three planned closures will be required, but this depends on how the demolitions progress.

Monday 2nd October

Contractors will start stripping out the inside of the building housing QS, Peacocks and The Engine House on the south side of Aylmer Square.

Monday 23rd October

Contractors will start demolishing the building.  This will continue into November and the demolition work will be finished before the start of the Christmas holiday season.
