Whats on in St Austell

World Water Day

22nd March 2007

World Water Day is being celebrated in St Austell Town Centre on 22nd March from 10am-4pm. This event is being supported by Restormel Borough Council, Eden, South West Water, Sustrans and various other organisations and will highlight sustainability issues being considered and implemented in the town centre re-development as well as promoting subjects such as water usage and raising awareness of water problems in various countries.

The day will mainly centre around a walk from the town centre to Eden which highlights the distance women/children in Africa, and other developing countries, have to walk to their closest watering hole and people will have the added incentive of free entry into Eden as well as organised transport back to the town centre.

There will be lots of organisations exhibiting within the town centre on the day, giving advice to local residents and businesses on how they can save water and cut costs. As well as information, there will be goody bags and entertainment in the form of choirs and an african band. Also look out for the special offers from our participating retailers - Thin End; G1 Clothing; Lanna Thai Supermarket; Wilsons; Adeba; Evans Home Hardware; Plus Two Menswear; Saxe Blue; Tengo!; Tiffanys and Alias Smith.

A competition planned for the day is for local organisations to put forward a team of five people to carry 20 litres of water (by whatever means they come up with - must be on foot!) from the town centre to Eden (20 litres being the average carried by women and children from watering holes back to their villages on a daily basis - they will already have walked this distance to get there!) and there will be a prize for the most ingenious method/team name/initiative shown.

Once at Eden, a talk will be held in The Gallery Restaurant where TV Presenter and Broadcaster Adam Hart-Davis will talk about his recent WaterAid projects in Bangladesh

FREE Entry to Eden if you complete the walk and FREE water stop en route!!!
